The ancient city of Chinguetti is the craddle of the Maures.

You walk around the old city and discover the centuries-old manuscripts kept in the family-run-libraries where erudites will enchant you with their tales. You will have friendly chats with the shop keepers who will invite you inside to share a Saharan tea. You will be in touch with your nomadic soul while  discovering the Adrar oasis (Lagueila, Lemghaleque Mhairet, Terjit...), and crossing the ergs and admire their amazing declinations of ocre colours (big erg Ouarane),  and across the canyons (Khangue Amoun) and the plateaus of Irat, Nouaje, Noizine at the pace of the camels. You will be delighted to reach the refreshing oasis of Terjit after marvelling at the view of the Mont Zarga. All along this meharee, you will meet the nomadic population of the Sahara.

The richness and peace of the Saharan landscapes  unravel before your eyes full of hidden secrets. You will be enchanted by the golden sandy curves,  the declinations of ocre colours, by the unvaluable treasures … and by their inhabitants, sentinels of an ancient world.
This journey lets you taste the authenticity and the mysteries of the desert and its inhabitants. These two old religious cities founded in the 11th and 12th centuries were once busy caravans trading centres. Nowadays you will be surpringly bewildered by their serenity and quietness. You will wonder how they are still standing facing the unforgiveable Saharan sands. You will share the life of the nomads in the oasis of Tenouchert for a night. You will truly understand the real meaning of the Saharan hospitality. All along the meharee you will walk through the magnificent and  varied landscapes of the Erg Ouarane.

The Sahara desert never looks the same. You will be charmed by its ever changing faces: the smooth wavy curves of the dunes in the sandy erg, the dark and ocre colours of the rocky regs, and the divine freshness of the oasis. While you walk through the Vallée Blanche and cross the Amatlich dunes at the pace of the camels, you will be pervaded by the quietness and serenity of the desert . We will spend the nights in  the dunes.

Amatlich dunes: the Sahara desert

A Méharée (treks with the camels) across the Amatlich dunes, the craddle of the Maures. We slow our pace when reaching the refreshing oasis of Nenn,  Gleitat,  Medah. We may sometimes spend the night in the vicinity of their noble palm trees.  At the pace of the camels we are starting to feel like a nomad in the oued Hamame, the breathtaking and mytical Tifoujar pass, the superb Vallée Blanche (White Valley) and the awesome Tezent  canyon. Now you know and you feel what being a nomad means, and even more when sharing a mechoui and  tasting the tradtionnal flat bread of the Sahara expertly and happily baked for you in sand and embers by the cooks and camel herders..

 With this tour you will get to know the history of Mauritania when visiting the Portuguese forts of Agwedir and El Ghalaouia,  Gelb El Richat crater and the prehistoric site of El Beyed. The landscapes will keep you in awe all the way to this northern part of the Adrar.

Banc d'Arguin and desert : between dunes and ocean

The natural reserve of the Banc d'Arguin will acquaint you with a new face of Mauritania between dunes and oceans. This tour will introduce you to the ornithological diversity of this Mauritanian national park.  Depending on the time of year, you may see many different species of migrating birds. You will also  meet the tribe of the Imraguen, Mauritanian fishermen who have been teaming up with dolphins for thousands of years  in a nature friendly way. They will take you for a sailing day on their "lanche" (Traditionnal fishing ship) and you will have the opportunity to contemplate the marine fauna and the many birds species. Tide willing, we may drive along the beach for many more exceptionnal viewings and discoveries.

Then we are back into the desert of the nomads. We reach the "baie des Lévriers", we drive along the railway where you will see the longest train in the world. We will then take you to the monolith of Ben Amira and his "wife" Aicha (we will tell you their story....). We will then get on to the famous Adrar and its impressive Saharian landscapes.

Discover the oasis of the Adrar and the Tagant

Two of the most beautiful regions of Mauritania, Adrar and Tagant. This is a  4X4 tour that will lead you to the most beautiful oases,  canyons and regs of the Adrar and of the Tagant region. The Tagant has much to offer: The Saharan crocodiles of Matmata, the ancient cities of Tichitt, Tidjikja, Rachid, and Khat, all built in old stones and the beautiful oasis of Ain Safra. We may also venture to the amazing city of Oulata (on approval of the authorities) close to the Malian border  (3 weeks needed). You will marvel at its singular architecture : white and ocre ornements that frame doors and windows in a magnificent and complex way. Each if these ornaments tell a unique story.
 We will be filled with awe and respect in front of the drawings realised by the first Saharan populations in the superb cave of Gentour Thouelme.

Mauritania: A country of diversity: Adrar and  Taguant, Atlantic Ocean and river Senegal

Thanks to this 4X4 tour you will discover a culturally and geographically diversified Mauritania

 

The magnificent and refreshing Adrar oases nestled between valleys and canyons will welcome you. You may even have the opportunity to bathe and swim in their clear waters.

You will tread on the century-old stony or sandy narrow streets  in the ancient cities of the Adrar - Ouadane, Chinguitti - and Tagant -Rachid, Tidjikja, Tichit, Oualata, Nema. We will watch the last Nile crocodiles in Matmata guelta.

 

Later on, we will drive along the Atlantic coast. You will marvel at the unique views where the Saharan landscapes disappear into the Atlantic ocean. We will reach the Banc d'Arguin. In this Natural park you'll have the opportunity to admire the richness and diversity of its marine and bird fauna (cormorants, egrets, pink flamingos, sternes, mocking birds, spoon bills and grey herons, waders, cetaces, fellings, sharks,  marine turtles). In the heart of the Banc d'Arguin, we will come across the ancestral tribe of the Imragens. These fishermen are known for their respectful fishing techniques in harmony with their environment. They specialise in yellow mullet fishing (poutargue). A few decades ago they were still partnering with dolphins to fish mullets. 

 

Later on we drive down south and discover remarquable mangrove landscapes while getting closer to Senegal and driving along the river that separates the two countries. We can watch and admire the rich bird fauna (black stork, herons, cormorants, crowned cranes, spoonbills, ducks, flamingos, waders, pélicans), mamals (hippopotamus, Nile varans, Seba python, crocodiles ) and  flora (paletuviers) of the Parc National du Diawling, Senegal river delta. We drive along the dike in Diama and have a glimpse at the Senegal, the country on the opposite bank. We come across numerous phacocheres .

 Vous débutez votre

voyage par la découverte des dunes de l'Adrar et ses paysages sahariens de regs et d'ergs. La lente méharée au pas des chameaux vous invite au silence et à la contemplation. Tout au long de votre périple vous croisez les nomades et partagez peut-être trois thés traditionnels, le zrig (boisson à base de lait de chamelle ou de chèvre) et quelques dattes, symboles de l'hospitalité mauritanienne.

 

Vous déambulez dans les étroites ruelles ensablées de Chinguitti, l'ancienne cité caravanière et septième ville sainte de l'Islam. Vous goûtez à sa sérénité et vous émerveillez devant son patrimoine intellectuel conservé dans les bibliothèques familiales.

 

Vous poursuivez votre immersion dans les paysages sahariens en montant à bord du train du fameux train du désert, mis en lumière dans de nombreux documentaires télévisés. Vous vivez une aventure extraordinaire au plus prés de la population mauritanienne.

 

La suite du périple se déroule sur les territoires des deux parcs nationaux mauritaniens: le Banc d'Arguin au nord  et le Parc du Diawling au sud. Vous observez leurs faune et avifaune d'une diversité exceptionnelle.

Au banc d'Arguin, vous aurez l'occasion de faire connaissance avec la tribu des Imragens, pêcheurs ancestraux de la côte atlantique mauritanienne. Ils vous convieront sur leur lanche -bateau de pêche traditionnel à voile - pour une journée d'observation et de partage.

Mauritanian National parks and Saint Louis du Sénégal

Ce circuit vous emmènera sur les territoires des deux Parcs Nationaux Mauritaniens, zones de préservation privilégiées de la faune ornithologique du Nord de la Mauritanie et du bas delta du Sénégal. Nous ferons aussi une petite escapade jusqu'à la belle ville de Saint Louis du Sénégal, les villes côtières et balnéaires de Saly et M'bour, l'île de Joal-Fadiouth, du légendaire lac Rose à proximité de Dakar. Nous visiterons l'île de Gorée, lieu si emblématique de l'histoire de l'esclavage.

 

Le Banc d'Arguin est devenu parc naturel national en 1976 sous l'impulsion de ce naturaliste amoureux de la Mauritanie qu'était Théodore Monod et par décision de Mokhtar Ould Dadah, 1er président de la République Islamique de Mauritanie. Il couvre 1/3 du littoral mauritanien, soit 12000km2 . La faune ornithologique y est d'une richesse exceptionnelle, que ce soit de par ses espèces endémiques ou ses oiseaux migrateurs. La faune marine y est aussi très présente.

Le parc du Diawling le long du fleuve Créé en 1991 offre également une grande biodiversité que les sécheresses successives et la création de 2 grands barrages (Diama et Mali) menacent cependant constamment.
